Students admitted to the M.A. in Medical Sciences program will pursue graduate study in medical cell biology and biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, neurobiology, and genetics and development. This intensive, full-time course-based program is completed in one year.
Admission Requirements:
Applicants who are a good fit for the M.A. in Medical Sciences program will already be good candidates for admission to medical school, but need to strengthen their academic preparation. Applicants must hold the baccalaureate with an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. In addition, all medical school prerequisites must have been completed (i.e., one year of biology, one year of general chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, one year of physics and one year of mathematics, preferably calculus). Applicants are strongly encouraged to have completed at least the equivalent of an undergraduate minor in one of the natural sciences. Application documents include:
Requirements
- An application to the Loyola University Chicago Graduate School
- Official MCAT scores with a minimum required score of 25; the oldest MCAT score considered is 2005
- Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended
- A personal statement that conveys your motivation for becoming a physician, and shares experiences that have contributed to your decision
- Students who have applied to medical school must submit a copy of their AMCAS, TMDSAS, or AACOMAS and may use the personal statement there to meet the above requirement
- A medical school application history must be provided. (How many times have you applied for entry into medical school and what were the results? Were you given any interviews or placed on waitlists?)
- Students who have not applied to medical school before should provide a detailed account of their extracurricular experiences (an expanded resume). Discuss any clinical, employment, teaching, leadership and research experiences you've had along with a brief description of what you learned from each experience.
- Three letters of recommendation appropriate for a medical school application and/or the committee letter written by your undergraduate institution. Letters of special value to the MAMS application review committee include an evaluation of your performance in clinical/patient contact settings. Academic and research letters are also useful.
NOTE: Our final deadline for admitted applicants to accept their admission and enroll in the program is July 15th.
