UIUC Medical Scholars Program (MD/PhD)

The MSP is one of the largest MD/PhD programs in the country with approximately 150 MD/PhD students currently enrolled. The MSP provides a diverse offering of PhD fields to combine with the MD - we have students pursuing PhDs in the humanities, social sciences, engineering, physical sciences and, of course, in the biomedical sciences. Our clinical training program provides many opportunities for 1-on-1interaction with practicing physicians. Scheduling - The primary scheduling requirement of the MSP is that students begin their studies in the graduate program. After completing the first year of graduate school, students, in consultation with their faculty advisors, and in accordance with MSP policies, are free to choose the appropriate sequencing of disciplines. Funding opportunities available for all MD/PhD students generally include a tuition and fee waiver along with a stipend. Funding is usually provided through the student's graduate department in the form of a research or teaching assistantship, and/or fellowship. The MSP also offers an MD/JD and an MD/MBA program, although funding for students in these two programs is limited.

Students apply via our Admissions website at http://www.med.uiuc.edu/msp/Admissions.asp. Please note that only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply to the College of Medicine, and thus to the Medical Scholars Program. Our MSP on-line application deadline for the 2008 Entering Class is December 31, 2007. Students must also designate school code #128 University of Illinois at Chicago on your AMCAS application by December 31, 2007. On the AMCAS application, they should check the MD/PhD Box and complete the associated MD/PhD essays if you are an MD/PhD applicant.

Our goal is to be one of the friendliest medical admissions offices in the nation. If you or your students have any questions about the Medical Scholars Program please contact our Assistant Dean, Amanda Cuevas, at 217-333-8146 or by e-mail at acuevas@uiuc.edu. We look forward to hearing from you!
