MCB Undergraduate Studies
Welcome to undergraduate studies at the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology. The MCB undergraduate curriculum is focused on the fundamental structures, functions, and mechanisms of living organisms. The MCB major provides a solid foundation in biochemistry, cell and developmental biology, microbiology, molecular genetics, and physiology and structural biology. 
Our proven program prepares students for various biomedical careers and for medical, dental and graduate schools. We cover not only existing knowledge but recent developments, many of which come from the work of our own faculty members, whom students have the opportunity to work with in both research lab and classroom settings. MCB majors also develop a strong foundation in math and physical sciences.
Taught by our world-renowned faculty researchers and educators, our undergrad program offers a broad array of curricular enhancements, including undergraduate research opportunities, honors programs, study abroad, and living–learning communities. We also encourage community engagement and outreach opportunities in our school, campus, and local communities. In all, majoring in MCB will allow you to learn and grow both academically and holistically, ensuring your future success and, we hope, a memorable experience that you will always value.
Program Overview
To study biology at Illinois, you begin as an unassigned major in the Biological Sciences Program of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). During your first year, you will take two introductory courses: MCB 150 in the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology and IB 150 in the School of Integrative Biology. During the second semester, you will be asked to declare a major course of study in either Molecular and Cellular Biology or Integrative Biology. Your curriculum of study will then be determined by the school of biology (MCB or IB) that you select. Upon completing the degree requirements, you will have earned a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts and Sciences.
To major in MCB, you first take a set of five required courses—MCB 250, 251, 252, 253, and 354—and then choose from a broad set of advanced offerings to complete the major. You will meet regularly with your academic advisor in the MCB Advising Program to ensure appropriate course selection and enhanced career planning.
